About Lottery Tax by State
Radif Partners reads the federal rate tables, the Form W-2G instructions and, state by state, the tax laws, forms and lottery claim rules, to show what a prize really leaves: the tax of the state that sold the ticket, the tax and credit of the state where the winner lives, city and county taxes, and each of the 30 annuity payments taxed in its own year. We sell no tickets, buy no annuities, pass no lead and never ask for a name, an e-mail or a phone number.
The gap this site fills
Search for a lottery tax calculator and the first results ask one question about the state, as if every winner bought the ticket where he lives. The best of them gives a year-by-year annuity but applies one flat state rate and says local taxes are not considered; another subtracts the federal withholding twice and still quotes the 2024 top bracket; a large personal finance site computes only the federal withholding and leaves the other state to the reader. News articles about the states that do not tax lottery prizes end with "consult a tax professional".
This site does better than the first Google result because it separates the state where you live from the state where the ticket was sold, applies the nonresident rule of the second, the credit of the first and the city or county tax, and taxes each of the 30 annuity payments in its own year at the 2026 federal brackets, with every rule read on the IRS, state tax department and lottery sites, where other calculators apply one state's flat rate to a prize that two states can tax.
Who publishes it
The site is published by Radif Partners, a company that builds calculators on public rules. It is not a lottery, a ticket courier, a casino, a sportsbook, a tax preparer, a law firm or a buyer of annuity payments; it is not run by or affiliated with any lottery, the Multi-State Lottery Association, the IRS or any state; it receives no commission and collects no lead.

What we rely on
The 2026 federal rate tables of Rev. Proc. 2025-32, the Form W-2G instructions (Rev. January 2026), Public Law 119-21 for the 90 % limit on gambling losses, the game rules of Powerball and Mega Millions, and for each state its statutes, tax forms and instructions, withholding guides and lottery claim rules: 292 official documents, all read on October 20, 2026. The tax of 51 of the 51 jurisdictions is computed; each state page lists its own sources.
What the site leaves out
Your other deductions, credits and investment income, the alternative minimum tax, a move between states during a year, and the judgment a state auditor applies to a particular residence question are not modelled. Where a state's 2026 schedule could not be read on an official page, the page says so and the calculator either applies the latest official schedule (and names it) or leaves that state's tax out. The method page lists every rule and simplification; the editorial policy explains corrections.
